World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14th every year to raise awareness about the importance of safe blood for transfusion. This day is an opportunity to acknowledge the life-saving contribution of voluntary blood donors and encourage more people to donate blood regularly. Safe blood is essential for medical and surgical procedures, including the treatment of life-threatening conditions such as cancer, anemia, hemophilia and sickle cell disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the importance of ensuring that blood is safe and available for everyone who needs it. Blood transfusion saves millions of lives every year, but many people still die due to the lack of safe blood. According to the WHO, 42% of blood donations are collected in high-income countries, which only represent 16% of the world’s population. In contrast, low- and middle-income countries face the biggest challenges in ensuring that blood is available and safe for patients.
At IntelliSOFT, we’re committed to improving the accessibility and safety of blood for those in need through our innovative projects. We’re proud to have been involved in two projects that have helped make blood donation more accessible and safer for those in need. Our Blood Donor Management System has improved the blood donor base in Kenya and promoted donor retention for successive repeat donations, while our Blood Safety Strengthening Programme has supported international efforts to electronically capture and manage data about blood donors and donations from the point of donation to point of transfusion.
The Blood Donor Management System is an mHealth system designed, developed, and implemented by IntelliSOFT. It aims to improve the blood donor base in Kenya and promote donor retention for successive repeat donations. This system has increased efficiency and improved continuity of care for donors, making it easier for them to donate blood regularly.
The Blood Safety Strengthening Programme supports international efforts to improve the accessibility and safety of blood in resource-constrained countries. It electronically captures and manages data about blood donors and donations from the point of donation to point of transfusion. This programme has helped to ensure that blood is available and safe for patients who need it the most.
World Blood Donor Day is an important reminder of the need for safe blood for transfusion. We encourage everyone to donate blood regularly and help save lives. As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day, let us all take a moment to appreciate the selfless act of blood donation and to recognize the importance of ensuring that blood is safe and available for everyone who needs it. Whether you are a regular blood donor or considering donating blood for the first time, your contribution can make a significant difference in someone’s life. Remember, giving blood is a simple act of kindness that can help keep the world beating.
