Bridging the Care Gap in the Maternal Health Journey
About the Project
Mama’s Hub is a comprehensive digital solution designed to transform maternal healthcare in Kenya. It was developed to digitize the Ministry of Health’s traditional paper-based Mother-Child Health Handbook (MOH 216) into a secure, real-time Maternal Health Information System (MHIS). The platform supports expectant mothers through every step of their pregnancy, ensuring they receive timely, high-quality care without the risk of lost or fragmented records.
Key Features and Innovations
● Built with distinct, user-friendly applications including a provider-facing mobile app for community health promoters (CHPs) and Antenatal Care (ANC) nurses, a patient-facing mobile app, and a web-based administrative dashboard.
● Supports integration with a consumer smartwatch to monitor maternal vital signs including blood pressure, pulse rate and temperature directly from the patient-facing app.
● Facilitates seamless electronic referral flows between clinics, community health workers and facilities, complemented by automated SMS reminders for appointments to reduce missed ANC encounters.
● Open-Source and Standards-Based: Built on Google’s Open Health Stack (using the Android FHIR SDK), the application is fully open-source, offline-capable and natively compliant with global HL7 FHIR and WHO SMART Guidelines.
Real-World Impact and Footprint
● Leveraging Open Health Stack slashed development time and allowed the team to reduce the initial prototype development cycle from an estimated nine months to just three months.
● Mama’s Hub was successfully piloted across three public health facilities in Nakuru County.
● The platform was successfully deployed, training and supporting over 50 registered nurses and community health workers, with a rapidly growing registry of enrolled expectant mothers.
