A Scalable, FHIR-Native National Immunization Registry
About the Project
OpenCHANJO is an efficient, scalable, and highly secure national immunization management platform designed to support both routine and non-routine vaccination workflows across Kenya. Grounded in Kenya’s National Immunization Policy Guidelines and the global Immunization Agenda (2030), OpenCHANJO replaces paper registers with an interoperable digital ecosystem to improve vaccination coverage, reduce drop-out rates, and protect public health.
Key Features and Innovations
● An offline-first Android mobile application for healthcare providers, built using the Open Health Stack’s Android FHIR SDK and Structured Data Capture (SDC) library to collect, validate and process immunization data on standard mobile devices.
● Integrates seamlessly into the Ministry of Health’s secure Self-Service Portal (linked with eCitizen). This enables citizens to register for vaccines, view their schedules, keep track of upcoming appointments and securely download verified vaccination certificates.
● Built-in defaulter tracking capabilities designed to flag missed vaccination appointments in real time, Utilizes OHS Data Pipes for resource flattening to reduce the complexity of performing analytics on FHIR data, generating standard Ministry of Health aggregate reports (such as MOH 710) and displaying near real-time dashboards via Apache Superset.
● Secure Role Management: Incorporates Keycloak and the FHIR Information Gateway to manage client and provider access with custom, role-based security controls.
